New life for Hubble telescope

An American astronaut removes Hubble's High Resolution Spectrograph in preparation for a new instrument during the second servicing mission in 1997, The 2008 mission will replace Hubble's aging batteries and failing gyroscopes. Without these repairs, the orbiting telescope would have died in only 2 to 3 years, burning up in the atmosphere.

Marathon spacecraft to be revived yet again
In 2008, the Hubble Space Telescope will be given another lease on life, extending its career until at least 2013. Scientists around the world raised an outcry when NASA administrators initially planned to cancel the repair mission. Astronauts will install a backup survey camera after the failure of the main camera in February, and several other instruments will continue to produce volumes of images and scientific data that could lead to more revelations on the beginnings of the universe.  FULL STORY
